At the recent BFMA Symposium in San Antonio, Lea Anne Fuchs& presented BFMA's most prestigious awards at the Tuesday president's banquet. The awards were presented to Franklin Garner, Aaron Marcus, Lisa Lee and Paul Showalter.
Franklin Garner (photo, right) and Aaron Marcus (photo, left) each received the Jo Warner Award. The Jo Warner Award was created in 1981 by BFMA to honor outstanding achievement in the forms profession. Named for one of the prime "movers" in the critical years of the organization’s formation, the award is reserved for those individuals who exhibit extraordinary qualities in leadership and skill in the forms field. But more than that, the award is meant to honor persons who have strived consistently to improve the forms profession, not just the association. The recipient does not need to be a member of the association to receive the award.
Franklin Garner is a long-time BFMA member and supporter. Franklin founded Amgraf, Inc. in 1972 as a company that provided software products for design and development of printed business forms. He is active in other forms-related professional associations such as PSDA and IADC. He is a long-time instructor at BFMA, PSDA and Print University and has served as a founding member of NASPO (North American Secure Products Organization). Franklin’s many contributions to the industry go well beyond making a living and representing Amgraf. He gives his own time and expertise to advance the industry at all levels – forms management, forms manufacturing and forms distribution. He is at the forefront with technological development and readily gives his expertise whenever asked.
Aaron Marcus is the founder and president of Aaron Marcus and Associates, Inc. (AM+A). He has been actively involved in visual communications since 1967 and has experience in a wide variety of programming and testing environments. Marcus has written over 250 articles and written/co-written five books. He is the Editor-in-Chief of User Experience (UX), Editor of Information Design Journal, and is a regular columnist of Interactions. He is also on the Editorial Boards of Visible Language, Universal Access Journal, and the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. He focuses his attention on the Web and wireless communication, mobile devices, helping the industry to learn about good user-interface and information-visualization design, providing guidelines for globalization/localization, the challenges of "baby faces" (small displays for consumer information appliances) of ubiquitous devices, and cross-cultural communication.
Lisa Lee and Paul Showalter each received BFMA's Award of Excellence. The Award of Excellence is designed to honor a member who has made significant contributions to our association. These efforts may be at the local, regional or international level. The BFMA Award of Excellence recognizes outstanding individual contributions to BFMA.
Lisa Lee has served at least three terms on the board of directors, including Director of Education and two terms as VP Administration. While in the VP role, she began the marketing council and as part of that, she initiated Forms Talk. Forms Talk is the first new member communication developed in many years. For 2008/09 she has been the newsletter editor, VP Admin and head of the marketing council. Lisa has been an instructor at the six most recent Symposia. She supports the association by attending Symposium, Institutes, Master Series classes and participating in the CFSP study group. She is a critical thinker and makes a valuable contribution to the association year after year. Lisa is the forms manager at Standard Insurance Co. in Portland, Oregon.
Paul Showalter is a long-time member of the Nation’s Capital Chapter and has served on the local board in several capacities, including president. During his tenure, membership increased dramatically and the chapter thrived. Paul has volunteered his time at the Association level for many years. He is well known as the Symposium photographer and has taken and processed thousands of pictures to record this and other events. Paul prepares and prints the Symposium on-site program book each year. For many years, he compiled and produced the Symposium Proceedings CD. Paul works as a forms professional at the Internal Revenue Service in Washington DC.
Many congratulations to this year's award winners. Check out the Jo Warner winners and the Award of Excellence winners of years past.
