Position: Region 9 Coordinator
Education: M.A. Mathematics, Oxford University, MBA Open University
How I Got Started: I was a project manager specialising in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when I got a job in 1992 delivering OCR systems to the UK Inland Revenue for processing tax forms. The systems didn't work and I found out that it was because of the way people filled out the forms. I became fascinated with the problem of how to design forms so that people find them easy to use - a fascination that shows no signs of wearing off.
Current Professional Duties: These days I’m a usability consultant. My work is about one-third forms, and two-thirds improving the content of very large web sites.
BFMA’s Potential Growth: We’ve got to understand that most people don’t know anything about managing forms, or improving forms. The biggest challenge is helping others to find out that we exist.
Most Fun Part of BFMA: Sharing our enthusiasm for our profession.
Favorite Book(s): Right now, it has to be the book on forms that I’ve co-authored with Gerry Gaffney. After 8 years of hard work, it’s finally out now on Amazon.
Passionate About: Making things easy to use
Personal Statement: Usability and user-centred design are passions that affect everything that I do.
